How to Make Expanded EM (EM Ready to Use) from EM1 Concentrate
Share
EM (Effective Microorganisms) is supplied in a concentrated form known as EM1, which is a living but dormant mixture.
To make EM economical for use, you can expand EM1. The process is straightforward but requires careful adherence to guidelines to ensure the quality is maintained.
When supplied, EM1 is in a dormant state with a pH of around 3.5. To promote expansion, you need to provide food for the living microorganisms and maintain a warm temperature. Expanding EM significantly increases the quantity, making it a cost-effective solution.
Ingredients for 20 Litres Expanded EM:
- 1 litre of EM1
- 1 litre of molasses
- 18 litres of water
- Aquarium heater
- Plastic container with a lid
For larger quantities, use 5% EM1 and 5% molasses of the total final volume.
Method:
- Dissolve Molasses: Use hot water to dissolve the molasses, then add cold water to lower the temperature to 30-35°C.
- Add EM1: Mix the EM1 thoroughly, and then top up the container with water to reach a total volume of 20 litres.
- Maintain Temperature: Keep the mixture at 30-35°C (using a fish aquarium heater is ideal).

Fermentation Process: During fermentation, you will notice:
- The initial black-brown color will change to brown-red.
- It will emit a sweet, fermentative, and vinegar-like smell.
- The taste will shift from neutral to acidic.
- The pH should drop to between 3.4 and 3.8. If it is below 3.9, it is ready for use.
Fermentation Period:
The fermentation should take 5–7 days at 25–30°C. If the temperature is lower, the process may take longer.
Storage Time:
The expanded EM is best used within 4 weeks. It can last up to 12 weeks if stored properly, kept out of sunlight in a sealed container.
Application Rates:
- Dilution: Always dilute EM Ready to Use with water.
- Typical Rate: Apply 20 litres per hectare of EM Ready to Use.
- Spray Applications: Typically diluted to 1% with water. For specific requirements, contact your supplier.
Notes:
- Yeast Formation: A white-brown surface layer is yeast. Release gases daily if the container is sealed (carbon dioxide builds up during fermentation).
- Quality Check: If the smell is unpleasant or pH is above 4 after 2 weeks, do not use. Consult the supplier.
- Cleanliness: Ensure containers are free from pesticides or detergents that may harm microorganisms.
Important:
- Expansion is recommended only once per batch to maintain quality.
- EM1 can also be used directly without expansion.
